    CQ Agbiz Launched

The first edition of CQ Agbiz, a monthly electronic newsletter featuring issues of importance to Central Queensland agribusiness, was sent to stakeholders on Friday afternoon.

CQ Agbiz is designed to keep those involved in the agribusiness supply chain abreast of developments as they impact on the Rockhampton Region and the wider Central Queensland area.

It is also designed to help develop an agribusiness network within Central Queensland which can help identify gaps in the agribusiness supply chain which can then be closed.

Rockhampton Regional Development Acting Chief Executive Rick Palmer said, “Agribusiness, and especially as it impacts on the beef industry, has been of particular relevance to Central Queensland and is one of the important elements in Rockhampton being known as “Australia’s Beef Capital”.

“As the Rockhampton Region positions itself to become more intimately entwined in the mining service supply chain, it’s vital the Region doesn’t lose its strong links with agribusiness and primary production in general, which have provided a great deal of CQ’s prosperity.”

“Every community in the world is trying to expand its service so it’s not dependent on one or two industries,” he said.

“The Rockhampton Region is no different. Over the past 150 years the Region has benefitted greatly from primary production and regional service. These strengths are reflected in the Region’s work profile with retail, health and community service and particularly education being at least two percentage points above the Queensland average.”

The Rockhampton Region is well positioned to provide goods and services to the southern Bowen Basin as well as the emerging Surat and Galilee Basins. It needs to maximise its returns from service to the resources sector, but not at the expense of its established links to agriculture.

CQ Agbiz is one tool which is designed to prevent that happening, Mr Palmer said.

    Farewell From The Chief Executive

This edition of the Rockhampton Regional Development’s e-newsletter will be the last in which I’ll contribute as Acting Chief Executive. On Monday 24th November 2008 I return to Rockhampton Regional Council as its Strategic Manager Economic Development, and Gary Kerr, who has worked for Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Limited (GAPDL) as Major Projects Officer in Biloela and been involved with the Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation and Dawson Valley Development Association, takes over as Rockhampton Regional Development Chief Executive.

We received 28 applications for the Chief Executive’s position and Gary was subjected to a rigorous process before being appointed the new full-time organisational head

I have been delighted what I and the team at Rockhampton Regional Development have been able to achieve in the past 10 months. The fear the organisation may not survive the Council amalgamation has put behind us and we have been able to recruit good people to take Rockhampton Regional Development forward.

Good quality, new blood has been brought onto the Rockhampton Regional Development’s Board and a system of advisory boards will expand the group of people making an intellectual contribution to growth of the Rockhampton region. This benefit of an engaged Board and advisory committees is one of the great legacies which have come from Chairman Simon Irwin and Deputy Chairman Mick Cranny.

Together with the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry, we have embarked on a project to enhance the mining service and agribusiness supply chains. This has resulted in three successful forums being held in the mining service area focussed on Anglo Coal’s purchasing procedures for its Dawson Mine, Gladstone Pacific Nickel project and Professor John Rolfe’s thoughts on the proposed emissions trading scheme.

They have also resulted in the development of two online newsletters, Mining Matters (link to MM) for those interested in the mining service supply chain and CQ Agbiz (link to AB) for those interested in the agribusiness supply chain. The supply chain initiative is of extraordinary importance to the Rockhampton region and I wish Gary and project officers Joe Cho and Sharyn Lowth all the best with it.

I would also like to record my thanks to Business Manager Carol Marechal for her tireless contribution to the running of Rockhampton Regional Development as a business. I’m also indebted to Communications Project Officer Lucy Belz, Executive Assistant Belinda Cranny and trainee Ashley Hickson for their effective contributions to a first class team effort. I have not forgotten Michelle Major who filled the Executive Assistant’s position for four months and did an outstanding job presenting the 2008 Ergon Energy Business Excellence Awards.

Finally, I would like to thank Simon, Mick and the other Board members for supporting me and helping Rockhampton Regional Development secure its future which can see it joining with Rockhampton Regional Council and the Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry to take advantage of the bright development growth on offer for the Rockhampton Region.

    CQUniversity Calls For Funding Review

CQUniversity Australia is asking members of the community to write to their local member of parliament to increase the amount of funding they receive.

At the moment, Central Queensland receives 1% of the Federal Government’s annual Higher Education Budget, despite generating 4% of the nation’s wealth.

"The issue for government right now is whether the cost of appropriately funding a regionally-based university is the overall public interest," said Vice Chancellor John Rickard.

With the cost of running their regional sites, CQUniversity has launched a website to raise awareness of the lack of funds in regional Queensland.

The government provides $2 million annually to help with the operating costs for CQUniversity’s regional campuses; unfortunately costs are upward of $10 million and rising.

"Clearly, given the level of funding, continuing operating an autonomous, multi-campus, university such as ours is a challenge," added Professor Rickard.

"Many people don't understand the urgency or the scale of the situation. That's why we've made the information available on the website and are asking people to learn more about it and tell their local representative why they think their local university needs to be maintained and sustained in Central Queensland."

The Government's Report on the Review of Higher Education, which will set-out the future direction for all universities, is expected to be released before the end of the year.
